Milwaukee Film Festival Hosts Film Celebrating The Art Of Advertising
The Milwaukee Film Festival will take place September 24 – October 4, 2009. The festival features 11 days of film screenings, special events and much more. More than 100 films will screen at the Landmark Theatres Oriental Theatre and the Marcus Theatres® North Shore Cinema. One of the movies I strongly encourage people to go see at the festival is “Art & Copy.” I was fortunate enough to see a pre-screening of the film about a month ago.
“Art & Copy” is a comprehensive history of modern-day advertising that gives you a glimpse into big industry, pop culture and the creative process. The film celebrates the creatives that fought conventional wisdom to create campaigns that quickly transcended mere commerce and became pop-culture sensations. The creators of the “Where’s the Beef”, “Got Milk?”, and Apple’s “Think Different” campaigns are among those interviewed, and the ads themselves play a major role in the narrative.
The common message in the film is the best advertisements can change how you feel. One pivotal point in the movie is when the film conducts man-on-the street interviews to capture people’s reactions to Nike’s “Just Do It” campaign. No talk about the shoes, only about the desire to chase their dreams.
It was great to see a film that celebrates the craft and dedication of the creative people behind our advertising industry. Advertising is often bashed for being soulless and this film demonstrates how concise communication in ads not only moves products but also appeals to emotions and intellect.
